Auxiliary London firemen at drill on a fireboat, WW2

Auxiliary London firemen (AFS) under instruction in the use of a rocket-line as part of their fireboat drills and training. The rocket-line was a flare-type gun which fired a rocket, with a thin line attached, from the fireboat to the shore or vice-versa, to which a stronger line would then be attached. That bigger line could then haul fire hose, connected to the fireboat, to shore and supply water to land based pumps fed from the river via the fireboats pumps

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment during World War II as Auxiliary London Firemen (AFS) undergo rigorous drills on a fireboat, skillfully maneuvering a rocket-line as part of their training. The Auxiliary Fire Service, an essential component of the London Fire Brigade during wartime, was formed in 1938 to supplement the regular fire brigade in the event of a large-scale emergency. The rocket-line, an innovative piece of equipment, was a flare-type gun that fired a rocket with a thin line attached. This line could then be used to transport a stronger one to the shore or vice-versa. The larger line could in turn haul fire hoses from the fireboat to the land, enabling water to be transported from the river to land-based pumps. The crew, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, are focused and determined as they practice this vital technique. The fireboat, with its powerful pumps and essential firefighting appliances, served as a crucial link between the water and the land, providing a vital water supply during emergencies. The 1940s were a time of great challenge for the London Fire Brigade, with the city under constant threat from air raids and fires. The Auxiliary Firemen played a pivotal role in protecting London during these trying times, and their training on fireboats like this one was essential to their success. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the Auxiliary London Firemen during World War II, and serves as a reminder of the vital role that fireboats played in the city's firefighting efforts during this period.
