Following a visit to the United States, the Chief Officer (Captain Eyre Massey Shaw) saw these devices in American firehouses, and brought the idea into his own fire stations. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, a London Fire Brigade fireman skillfully navigates a sliding pole, descending from an upper floor of a building during a fire emergency. The image, captured in the 1950s, showcases the innovative use of this essential piece of firefighting equipment that was introduced to the London Fire Brigade following a visit by Chief Officer Eyre Massey Shaw to American firehouses in the late 1940s. Initially, the sliding poles in London fire stations were designed with a simple hole in the upper floor through which the pole passed. However, after a few unfortunate accidents, the brigade recognized the need for improved safety measures. Consequently, the pole holes were protected to prevent any potential mishaps, ensuring the well-being of both the firemen and the public. The poles, made of brass, were an essential component of the fire service's rapid response strategy. They allowed firefighters to quickly reach the upper floors of burning buildings, enabling them to tackle fires more efficiently and effectively. The poles, along with the fire appliances and fire engines, were housed in the fire station bays, ready for immediate deployment in emergencies. The London Fire Brigade firemen, dressed in their iconic uniforms, are a testament to the bravery and dedication of the firefighting community. The speed and agility displayed in this photograph reflect the urgency and importance of their work in saving lives and protecting property during times of crisis. This photograph, taken in the 1950s, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the London Fire Brigade and the evolution of firefighting techniques. It is a poignant reminder of the vital role that firefighters play in our communities and the advancements in technology and safety protocols that have shaped their work over the decades.
