LCC-LFB Great Marlborough Street fire station, W1

Built by the London County Council, Great Marlborough Street fire station was located at 53 Great Marlborough Street. The widespread adoption of motorised fire engines by the LFB led to a reduction in the number of fire stations they required. A report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of 15, and this was one of them. The former fire station was sold off but destroyed by fire in the early 1970s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Great Marlborough Street Fire Station, W1: A Historic Edwardian Building Once Dedicated to Fire Service in Central London This evocative photograph captures the former Great Marlborough Street Fire Station, located at number 53 on the bustling and historic street in the heart of London's West End. Built by the London County Council (LCC) in 1906, this magnificent Edwardian structure was a dedicated facility for the London Fire Brigade (LFB), serving the local community and the city's vibrant commercial district. The widespread adoption of motorised fire engines by the LFB in the early 20th century led to a significant reduction in the number of fire stations required. In 1920, a report recommended the closure of 15 stations, and unfortunately, the Great Marlborough Street Fire Station was one of them. Despite its rich history and architectural significance, the former fire station was eventually sold off. However, the building met an unfortunate fate in the early 1970s when it was destroyed by fire, leaving only memories and this photograph as reminders of its existence. The facade of the building, with its distinctive red brick and white stone detailing, stands as a testament to the era of firefighting before motorised engines. The Edwardian architecture, with its arched windows and intricate stonework, is a striking contrast to the modern buildings that now surround it. This photograph offers a glimpse into London's firefighting history and the evolution of the city's fire services. The Great Marlborough Street Fire Station may no longer exist, but its legacy lives on in the memories of those who served there and in the stories passed down through generations. This photograph is from the extensive collection of historical images at Mary Evans Picture Library, available for licensing and use in various media projects.
