EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of firefighting in London at the turn of the 20th century. Taken at Dulwich Fire Station, which opened in 1892 and was located at 250 Lordship Lane, the image shows a team of brave firefighters from the London County Council Metropolitan Fire Brigade (LCC-MFB) posing proudly on the horse-drawn steamer, their uniforms gleaming in the sunlight. The fire station, a Victorian-era building, was unique in that it provided living quarters for the firefighters' families on the first floor, as indicated by the child peering out of a window above. The horse-drawn steamer, an essential piece of firefighting equipment during this era, was pulled by two powerful horses, and the large pump at the back of the appliance could deliver up to 1,200 gallons of water per minute. The firefighters, dressed in their heavy, protective gear, are shown in various poses, some with their arms around each other, others adjusting their helmets or checking their equipment. The presence of the child in the window adds a human touch to the scene, reminding us that behind the brave facade of the firefighters were families who waited anxiously for their loved ones to return home from a long day of service. This photograph is a testament to the dedication and courage of the firefighters of the LCC-MFB during a time when firefighting was a more dangerous and physically demanding occupation than it is today. The image captures the essence of community spirit and the importance of the fire service in protecting the people and buildings of London.
