LCC-MFB Holborn fire station, London WC1

Holborn had a fire station in its locality for ninety years. The first one, built in French Horn Yard, was part of the London Fire Engine Establishment. The station shown here was in the MFB, located in Theobalds Road, WC1. It closed in 1923. The adoption of motorised fire engines by the then LCC/LFB led to a reduction in the number of fire stations required. A report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of some 15 stations, including Holborn. The station was later demolished

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic LCC-MFB Holborn Fire Station, located in Theobalds Road, WC1, London, during its operational years with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB). Holborn had a rich firefighting history that spanned over ninety years, with the first station established in French Horn Yard as part of the London Fire Engine Establishment. The station depicted in this image was built in the early 1900s and served the community until its closure in 1923. The adoption of motorized fire engines by the London County Council (LCC) and later the London Fire Brigade (LFB) led to a significant reduction in the number of fire stations required. A report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of some 15 stations, including Holborn. The Victorian-era fire station, with its red brick facade and tall chimney, stands proudly against a backdrop of London's bustling streets. Firefighters could be seen rushing to respond to emergencies from this strategically located station, which protected the Holborn area and its residents. The building, now demolished, is a reminder of the vital role that fire stations played in London's history. The LCC-MFB Holborn Fire Station stands as a symbol of the bravery and dedication of the firefighters who served there, ensuring the safety of their community during times of crisis. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the rich history and heritage of London's firefighting tradition.
