LFB trailer pump competition at Brigade HQ, Lambeth, WW2

Two trailer pump crews engaged in a competition in the headquarters drill yard. The trailer pump had to be set into the water in the emergency inflatable dams. Water was then lifted from the dams and jets got to work, knocking down targets in the drill yard. Then all the equipment had to be put away and the fire crew and trailer pump raced over the finish line. The fastest time wins the competition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intensity and camaraderie of a London Fire Brigade (LFB) trailer pump competition during World War II. Set in the drill yard of the Brigade's headquarters in Lambeth, two trailer pump crews are engaged in a fierce contest. The trailer pumps, essential vehicles for extinguishing fires in the absence of hydrants, had to be swiftly set into the emergency inflatable dams. With water lifted from the dams, powerful jets got to work, knocking down targets in the drill yard. The crews' focus and determination are palpable as they strive for the fastest time. Once the competition was over, the crews had to efficiently put away their equipment and race over the finish line. The winning crew would be hailed as the fastest and most effective. This competition was a crucial part of the LFB's training regimen during the 1940s, ensuring that firefighters were prepared for the challenges of wartime firefighting. The photograph, taken by an unknown photographer for the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and training of the London Fire Brigade during World War II.
