Built originally for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in 1868, Hampstead fire station was located at 49 Heath Street, NW London. It became the responsibility of the London County Council in 1889 upon the creation of the LCC, when the MFB changed its name to the London Fire Brigade. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Hampstead fire station, located at 49 Heath Street in North West London. Originally built for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in 1868, the station became the responsibility of the London County Council (LCC) in 1889, following the creation of the LCC and the subsequent name change of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade to the London Fire Brigade. The Edwardian-era building, with its distinctive clock tower and red brick facade, stood proudly on the corner of Heath Street and served as a vital community service for over six decades. The station was one of many that were closed during the 1920s as part of a modernization process, with the introduction of motorised fire appliances and improved performance petrol engines allowing for larger fire station grounds. The photograph, taken in 1905, shows the fire station in its prime, with firemen gathered around the tower, likely preparing for a drill or training exercise. The horse-drawn fire engine, with its gleaming brass fittings and red wheels, is parked in front of the station, a testament to the era's reliance on animal power for emergency services. The clock tower, with its intricate details and ornate design, dominates the scene, adding a sense of grandeur and importance to the station. The fire station, with its towering presence on the corner of the busy Heath Street, was a familiar sight to the residents of Hampstead, serving as a reminder of the vital role the fire brigade played in protecting their community. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the history of the London Fire Brigade and the important role fire stations played in the daily lives of Londoners over a century ago.
