EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a shoulder title of the Calcutta Light Horse, dating back to 1887-1947. Crafted from metal, this brass badge proudly displays the unit's initials, CLH. Originally established in 1872 as the Calcutta Volunteer Lancers, this auxiliary unit served within the British Indian Army Cavalry Reserve. The Calcutta Light Horse gained significant recognition during World War Two when its members participated in Operation CREEK in 1943. This daring mission was organized by the Special Operations Executive and aimed to sabotage German shipping involved in transmitting intelligence from a neutral port in Portuguese Goa. As India gained independence in 1947, marking a monumental moment for the nation's history, the unit was disbanded. However, its legacy lives on through artifacts like this shoulder title that serve as reminders of their service and dedication. From the Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection at London's National Army Museum, this print captures not only an important piece of military history but also pays homage to those who bravely served under the banner of the Calcutta Light Horse. With its intricate details and rich symbolism, this image transports us back to an era where honor and duty were held paramount.
