Alexanders Column near Kabul, 1879 circa (b / w photo)

5924293 Alexanders Column near Kabul, 1879 circa (b/w photo) by Unknown photographer, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Alexanders Column near Kabul, 1879 circa.
Photograph, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879 circa.
As the British advanced into Afghanistan they came across many ancient ruins and monuments, evidence of the countryAs rich and varied heritage. They photographed, painted, sketched, classified and recorded these sites, doing much to increase our understanding. Their work was part of the imperial scheme. The development of archaeology, linguistics, anthropology and the birth of the museum were all based on an impulse to collect, classify and control information about diverse cultures. It was no coincidence that many of the pioneers in the ancient history of the subcontinent, its religions and languages were often the very same soldiers and civil servants who conquered, surveyed and administered India and its associated regions.
From album of 46 photographs. Associated with Sir Fs Roberts, Commissariat Department.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Alexanders Column near Kabul, 1879 circa" captures a glimpse of the rich history and cultural heritage encountered by the British during their advance into Afghanistan. Taken during the 2nd Afghan War in 1879, this photograph showcases an ancient column believed to be associated with Alexander the Great's conquests. As the British soldiers ventured deeper into Afghanistan, they stumbled upon numerous ruins and monuments that served as tangible evidence of the country's diverse past. In their quest to understand these historical sites better, they diligently photographed, painted, sketched, and classified them. This work not only contributed to expanding our knowledge but also played a significant role in shaping disciplines such as archaeology, linguistics, anthropology, and museum studies. Interestingly enough, many of those involved in documenting Afghanistan's ancient history were also part of Britain's imperial scheme. Soldiers and civil servants who conquered India and its surrounding regions often found themselves at the forefront of exploring subcontinental cultures' religions, languages, and histories. The photo is part of an album containing 46 photographs associated with Sir Fs Roberts from the Commissariat Department. Preserved at London's National Army Museum since it is out of copyright restrictions; this image offers us a window into both Afghanistan's past glory under Alexander's reign and Britain's colonial legacy intertwined with archaeological pursuits.
