LCC-LFB Merryweather self-propelled Fire King pump

First introduced into the UK by Merryweather of Greenwich, SE London, in 1899, by 1907 twenty-one Fire Kings were in operational use around the country, including the London Fire Brigade. A modified Fire King was stationed at Whitefriars fire station in the City of London. The Fire King could travel at a speed of 20-30 mph but was unable to negotiate a significant gradient without stopping to build a sufficient head of steam. Seen here with crew at the London Fire Brigade headquarters, Southwark SE1

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the LCC-LFB Merryweather Self-Propelled Fire King pump, a historical firefighting appliance that revolutionized the firefighting scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Introduced into the UK by Merryweather of Greenwich, SE London, in 1899, this innovative pump was in operational use by twenty-one stations around the country by 1907, including the London Fire Brigade. The Fire King, a steamer-powered engine, could travel at a speed of 20-30 mph, making it a swift response vehicle for emergencies. However, its inability to negotiate significant gradients required it to stop and build a sufficient head of steam before continuing. In this image, we see the Fire King proudly displayed at the London Fire Brigade headquarters in Southwark, SE1, with its dedicated crew. The crew members, dressed in their brass helmets and Edwardian-era uniforms, exude a sense of pride and readiness for action. The Fire King's impressive size and the crew's determined expressions convey the importance of this appliance in the firefighting community during this era. The Fire King's operational capabilities, along with its self-propelled design, set it apart from traditional fire engines of the time. Its introduction marked a significant step forward in the evolution of firefighting equipment and transportation. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of the London Fire Brigade and the essential role that innovative technology played in firefighting during the early 1900s.
