Cleveland Petrol Station, Marr, South Yorkshire, 1963. An early 1960s petrol station in the village of Marr, close to the A1 between Doncaster and Barnsley. The station was run by Clevelend Petrols, which were marketed by an independent company based in north-east England. The name comes from the Cleveland Hills, not from Cleveland, Ohio in the USA. In the 1930s, this company was bought by the Anglo-American Oil Co (Esso), but the Cleveland name was retained, largely as the subsidiary marketed a benzole blend and an alcohol mixture called Discol. In 1973, Esso chose to end Cleveland brand and gave up selling benzole or alcohol blends. Clevelands 2000 filling stations were soon switched to the Esso brand. In the service bay, a Mk 1 Ford Cortina can be seen. The service station still existed as of 2009 but the site was derelict

Situated near the A1 between Doncaster and Barnsley in South Yorkshire, this petrol station was operated by Cleveland Petrols. Contrary to popular belief, the name 'Cleveland' originated from the Cleveland Hills rather than Cleveland, Ohio in the USA. During its heyday, Cleveland Petrols was an independent company based in northeast England that specialized in benzole blends and an alcohol mixture known as Discol. In 1930s it was acquired by Anglo-American Oil Co (Esso), but they retained the distinctive name. However, by 1973 Esso decided to discontinue using the Cleveland brand and ceased selling benzole or alcohol blends. The approximately 2000 filling stations under Clevelands were subsequently rebranded as Esso. In this intriguing snapshot of history captured by artist Michael Walters, we see a service bay with a classic Mk 1 Ford Cortina parked inside. It is worth noting that while this photograph showcases a moment frozen in time from over half a century ago when petrol stations were still referred to as service stations; today's viewers may find it fascinating how much has changed since then. Although this particular site remained standing until at least 2009 when it became derelict; through Walters' lens we can appreciate not only the architecture of that era but also glimpse into everyday life on Britain's roads during the swinging sixties.
