The Garter Banquet, St. Georges Hall, 1844. Creator: Stephen Sly

The Garter Banquet, St. Georges Hall, 1844. Louis Philippe, King of France is a guest of Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle: Covers were laid in the evening, in St. Georges Hall, for 130. The banquetting table was ornamented, if possible, in a still more gorgeous and magnificent manner, with gold plate, epergues, candelabra, vases, wine coolers, &c. than upon the two former occasions of the banquet in St. Georges Hall during his Majestys visit...The plate seen, are portions of the Prince of Waless Plateau, a service entirely of solid gold. In the centre is the famous St. Georges Candelabrum; on each side are smaller ones of the Hesperides and other classical subjects, the whole resting on massive slabs of plate glass, bound with gold. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in British history - "The Garter Banquet, St. Georges Hall, 1844". The esteemed Louis Philippe, King of France, graces Queen Victoria's presence as her honored guest at Windsor Castle. The grandeur of the event is evident in every detail. As evening falls, the banquetting table in St. Georges Hall is adorned with an unparalleled display of opulence. Gold plate glistens alongside exquisite epergues, candelabra, vases, and wine coolers. This spectacle surpasses even previous banquets held during his Majesty's visit. The photograph showcases remarkable pieces from the Prince of Wales' Plateau - a solid gold service that exudes magnificence. At its center stands the famous St. Georges Candelabrum while smaller ones depicting classical subjects flank it on either side. These majestic creations rest upon massive slabs of plate glass bound with gold. Stephen Sly skillfully captured this historic moment through his lens for "Illustrated London News" in 1844 (Vol I). His engraving transports us back to a time when fortifications like Windsor Castle symbolized power and prestige. In this image filled with dignitaries and guests alike, we catch a glimpse of Louis Philippe himself among other notable figures attending the banquet. Their presence adds depth to our understanding of this significant event that united two powerful nations. This print serves as both a historical document and a testament to the lavishness displayed during royal banquets in 19th-century Britain.
