EDITORS COMMENTS
In this etching by Hans Sebald Beham, we are transported back to ancient Rome as we witness the legendary act of bravery performed by Mucius Scaevola. Created around 1520, this print beautifully captures the intensity and determination of the Roman hero. Mucius Scaevola, a young Roman soldier, is depicted holding his hand in a blazing fire with unwavering resolve. According to legend, during an invasion by Etruscan forces led by King Porsenna, Mucius infiltrated their camp with the intention of assassinating him. However, he mistakenly killed one of Porsenna's advisors instead. When captured and brought before the king for punishment, Mucius defiantly thrust his right hand into a nearby fire without flinching or showing any signs of pain. This fearless act astounded Porsenna who spared his life and eventually made peace with Rome. Beham's meticulous attention to detail brings this dramatic moment to life on paper. The flames dance around Mucius' hand while smoke billows upwards creating a sense of urgency and danger. The artist skillfully captures every expression on Mucius' face - from determination to pain - showcasing his unwavering loyalty towards Rome. This remarkable etching serves as a testament to human courage and sacrifice throughout history. It reminds us that acts of bravery can transcend time and inspire generations long after they have occurred.
