This beautiful church, by [Sir Christopher] Wren, is situated between Idol-lane and St. Dunstan s-hill, Tower-street...The church is dedicated to St. Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury, after whom it is called...The ancient church was damaged by the great fire of 1666, and was shortly after repaired; but the elegant spire and tower were not finished till 1699. They are masterpieces of design and construction....The body of the church having been only repaired by Wren, and having fallen much into decay, it was taken down and re-built in 1821, under the direction of Mr. David Laing, the architect of the Custom-house. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent St. Dunstan's-in-the-East, a church nestled in the heart of the City of London. Built by the renowned architect Sir Christopher Wren, this architectural masterpiece stands proudly between Idol-lane and St. Dunstan's-hill on Tower Street. Dedicated to St. Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury, this historic church suffered damage during the devastating Great Fire of 1666 but was promptly restored. However, it wasn't until 1699 that its elegant spire and tower were completed, showcasing Wren's exceptional design skills. In 1821, due to significant decay in the body of the church repaired by Wren himself, it was decided to demolish and rebuild it under the guidance of architect Mr. David Laing. The result is truly remarkable - a reimagined structure boasting an exquisite interior that rivals any other in London. This enchanting engraving from "Illustrated London News" captures not only the grandeur of St. Dunstan's-in-the-East but also provides a glimpse into Victorian-era Britain with its intricate details and timeless beauty. As we admire this image today, we are reminded of both our rich religious heritage and our ability as humans to restore and preserve historical treasures for future generations to appreciate.
