LCC-LFB Kensington fire station, SW London Featured LFB Print

LCC-LFB Kensington fire station, SW London

Located in Old Court Place near Kensington Church Street, Kensington fire station retained a horse drawn turntable ladder until 1921 when it was finally replaced by a motorised version. It was the Brigade's last remaining horse drawn fire engine. Seen here is the appliance room, with the horses waiting in their stalls and the fire engines in readiness for the next call. In the corner is the station watchroom with a fireman sitting at the desk

Merryweather Fire King steam pump and crew Featured LFB Print

Merryweather Fire King steam pump and crew

Merryweather Fire King steam pump and crew, Southwark HQ. In 1899 Merryweather modified its steamer pumps to also propel the vehicle, and thus London's first non-horse-drawn fire engines arrived. Unfortunately the Fire Kings, as they were called, were slow (12 mph maximum) and cumbersome to steer. Stopping was also a problem as they weighed 5.5 tons

Hendon Fire Brigade (later part of Middlesex FB) Featured LFB Print

Hendon Fire Brigade (later part of Middlesex FB)

In 1855 a fire brigade was established in Hendon, renamed the Hendon Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1866, and a manual fire engine was kept in a building near the church. Seen here is the Hendon Fire Brigade with its motorised pump escape and crew at the present Hendon fire station. It would later be absorbed into the existing Middlesex Fire Brigade
