Blitz in London -- firefighting from the River Thames

Blitz in London -- the London Fire Brigade had three fireboats in peacetime, based at Lambeth, Blackfriars, and Cherry Garden Pier, Rotherhithe. With the approach of war a greater waterborne force was necessary to tackle the likely dock fires and pump ashore much needed water supplies. Ten extra fireboats were brought into service, each one capable of pumping four tons of water per minute. In addition eight dumb barges, fitted with fire pumps, could be towed to locations and thus provide platforms from which the pumps could be operated. Seen here is one of the dumb barges

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intensity of the London Blitz during World War II as firefighters battle a raging inferno from the River Thames. In peacetime, the London Fire Brigade operated three fireboats stationed at Lambeth, Blackfriars, and Cherry Garden Pier, Rotherhithe. However, with the imminent threat of dock fires and the need to transport large quantities of water to affected areas, ten additional fireboats were brought into service. Each of these boats could pump an impressive four tons of water per minute. Moreover, eight dumb barges, fitted with fire pumps, were also acquired. These barges could be towed to specific locations and functioned as platforms for operating the pumps. In this photograph, one of the dumb barges is shown, adding to the impressive waterborne firefighting force that played a crucial role in protecting London during the 1940s. The London Fire Brigade's quick response and effective use of these resources helped mitigate the devastating impact of the Blitz on the city.
