EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a GLC-LFB Breathing Apparatus Control Van (BACV) stationed at a London Fire Brigade divisional headquarters during the 1960s. The Greater London Council (GLC) and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) merged on 1 April 1965, resulting in an enlarged fire brigade with eleven divisions, each headed by a divisional headquarters and staff office. The BACV was a vital component of this new setup, as it attended all fires requiring breathing apparatus or where assistance had been requested. The BACV was a specialized vehicle, designed to carry and control the distribution of breathing apparatus for firefighters. Its presence at each divisional headquarters ensured a quick response to emergencies, enabling firefighters to enter hazardous environments and save lives. The van, with its distinctive markings and equipment, represented the advanced capabilities of the London Fire Brigade during this era. The 1960s was a time of significant change for the London Fire Brigade, as they adapted to the challenges of a larger, more complex organization. The BACV was one of many new appliances and vehicles that were introduced during this period, reflecting the Brigade's commitment to providing the best possible service to the people of London. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the important role of the BACV in the London Fire Brigade's history. It serves as a reminder of the dedication and professionalism of the firefighters who operated these vehicles and the crucial role they played in protecting the city during the 1960s.
