EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the GLC-LFB Dual Purpose Pump-Escape fire engine, registration number D25, stationed at Chiswick Fire Station in London during the 1960s. The GLC-LFB, or Greater London Council-London Fire Brigade, was formed on 1 April 1965, bringing together various fire services in the Greater London area. The fire engine depicted in this image is a former Middlesex Fire Brigade appliance, a diesel-powered AEC/Merryweather engine. The AEC/Merryweather company was a leading manufacturer of fire engines during the 20th century, and this particular vehicle showcases their expertise in designing versatile firefighting equipment. The Dual Purpose Pump-Escape fire engine was designed to serve two essential functions: pumping water to extinguish fires and providing a means of escape for firefighters. The engine's pumping capabilities were crucial for delivering water to the scene of a fire, while its escape function was designed to help firefighters evacuate the vehicle if necessary, ensuring their safety during emergency situations. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of London's firefighting services during a pivotal period of consolidation and modernization. The GLC-LFB's fleet of fire engines, including the D25 pump-escape from Chiswick Fire Station, played a vital role in protecting Londoners from the risks of fire. This image is part of the extensive collection of historical fire service photographs held by the London Fire Brigade and Mary Evans Picture Library. It provides a valuable record of the firefighting vehicles that have served London over the decades and the important role they continue to play in ensuring public safety.
