EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Southern Command Major Control Unit of the Greater London Council-London Fire Brigade (GLC-LFB) in action during the 1960s. Established on 1 April 1965, the GLC-LFB was created through the amalgamation of various fire services in and around London. The Brigade was divided into three Command areas: Northern, Eastern, and Southern, each with a Command Headquarters that housed a Major Control Unit. Seen here is the Southern Command control unit, which was stationed at its headquarters. The unit is filled with a range of vehicles and appliances essential for managing and coordinating firefighting operations in the Southern Command area. The control unit is home to several fire engines, lorries, and breakdown transport vehicles. Each vehicle is meticulously maintained to ensure optimal performance and readiness for emergencies. The Major Control Unit played a crucial role in managing the day-to-day operations of the Southern Command area, dispatching fire engines and other resources to incidents as needed. The unit's operators communicated with fire stations, ambulance services, and other emergency services to coordinate responses and ensure the most effective use of resources. The 1960s was an era of significant change for the London Fire Brigade, as it adapted to the challenges of a rapidly growing and evolving city. This photograph offers a glimpse into the inner workings of the Southern Command Major Control Unit, showcasing the dedication and professionalism of the firefighters and support staff who worked tirelessly to keep London safe.
