LCC-LFB Brigade headquarters jumping sheet drill

Jump sheet demonstration by firefighters at Southwark HQ -- a long gone London Fire Brigade training routine. Jumping sheets were carried on front line London fire engines until late 1941 when the wartime National Fire Service came about. Until then weekly drill with a firefighter playing the jumper took place. Here, during a display at Southwark, the command has gone out: Taut Sheet! and a London firefighter falls onto the sheet, almost standing to attention on his way down

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment from a jump sheet drill demonstration held at the Southwark Headquarters of the London Fire Brigade in the 1930s. Jump sheets were an essential part of London fire engines' equipment until late 1941, when the National Fire Service took over. During weekly drills, a firefighter would act as the jumper, falling onto the taut sheet held by his comrades. In this image, the command "Taut Sheet!" has been given, and a brave firefighter falls onto the sheet, almost coming to a standing position upon impact. The sheet, acting like a rudimentary trampoline, breaks his fall, allowing him to land safely. This training routine, a relic of the London County Council Fire Brigade's (LCC-LFB) past, demonstrates the teamwork, agility, and quick reflexes required of firefighters in the 1930s. The photograph, taken at Southwark HQ, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of London's Fire Brigade and the unique training methods of the era.
