Jump sheets were an essential part of London fire engines' equipment until late 1941, when the National Fire Service took over. During weekly drills, a firefighter would act as the jumper, falling onto the taut sheet held by his comrades. The sheet, acting like a rudimentary trampoline, breaks his fall, allowing him to land safely.
