LCC-LFB Downham fire station, Lewisham, SE London
London was expanding and the London Fire Brigade had to meet the expansion. The Downham Estate, in SE London, was the London County Councils largest social housing development (Council Estate) on the London and Kent (Bromley) border. Downham fire station, with its single engine, was erected in Reigate Road, on the Downham Estate, to provide fire cover for a much greater life risk than had previously existed. It still stands, although much modernised, in the same location today

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Downham Fire Station in Lewisham, SE London, as it stood in the mid-20th century. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) established this single-engine fire station in Reigate Road on the Downham Estate to meet the expanding needs of London's growing population and increased life risk in the area. The Downham Estate, developed by the London County Council (LCC), was the largest social housing development in London and Kent (Bromley) border, providing homes for thousands of residents. The fire station, with its distinctive red brick building, bay, and shed, was a vital addition to the community, ensuring fire cover for the vast and densely populated area. The photograph shows two fire appliances, each with their unique characteristics, parked in the station's bay, ready for immediate response. The fire station's shed houses additional equipment and supplies, essential for firefighting operations. The London Fire Brigade's presence in Downham was crucial, as the estate's expansion brought with it an increased risk of fires in the buildings and structures. The brigade's quick response and dedication to public safety were essential in protecting the lives and property of the residents. Today, Downham Fire Station still stands in the same location, although much modernised, serving the community with advanced equipment and a larger team of firefighters. The photograph serves as a reminder of the important role fire stations play in our communities, providing essential fire cover and ensuring the safety of residents in times of need.
