EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic LCC-LFB Isle of Dogs fire station, located at 461 West Ferry Road in East London. Built by the London County Council in the 1920s, this magnificent fire station was a vital part of the local community and firefighting services in the area. With its distinctive red brick facade and prominent corner location, the building was a familiar sight for residents and visitors alike. The fire station, which was subsequently renamed Millwall fire station, was home to a number of fire engines and a dedicated team of firefighters. The pump house, located at the rear of the station, housed the powerful fire engines that were ready to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day. The station was in operation until 2006, when it was closed as part of a modernization program and the new Millwall fire station was opened. Despite its closure, the historic fire station still stands proudly on West Ferry Road. While it is no longer in use as a fire station, it continues to be an important part of the local community as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of the firefighters who served there. The building, which dates back to 1928, is a testament to the rich history of the London Fire Brigade and the vital role it plays in protecting the people of London. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, offers a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the important work that continues to be carried out by the London Fire Brigade today.
