LCC-LFB Islington fire station stables

Islingtons first fire station opened in 1860 in Florence Street. The station pictured here was located in Upper Street, and opened in 1899. Horses would remain in use in the London Fire Brigade until 1921, although motorised fire engine were being introduced into the service in increasing numbers from the early 1900s. Coachmen were designated firemen responsible for driving the horse drawn engines, and the horses were stabled at the fire station in stalls within or adjacent to the engine room

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Islington Fire Station on Upper Street, London, in its heyday during the late 1800s. Established in 1899, this fire station was the second for the borough of Islington, following the opening of the first station in Florence Street in 1860. The London Fire Brigade, which began in 1865, relied on horses and their dedicated handlers, known as coachmen or firemen, to respond to emergencies until motorised fire engines became more prevalent around the turn of the century. In this image, we see the horses stabled within or adjacent to the engine room, surrounded by straw bedding and hay bales. The horses were an integral part of the firefighting team, their strength and agility enabling the heavy fire engines to reach the scene of a blaze quickly and efficiently. Firemen were responsible for not only driving the horses but also for harnessing, feeding, and caring for them. The London Fire Brigade's reliance on horses began to wane in the early 1900s as motorised engines took centre stage. However, this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era when horses were an essential component of London's firefighting services. The Islington Fire Station on Upper Street, with its horse stables, stood as a testament to the important role these animals played in protecting the city from fire.
