Opened on 27 June 1907, Knightsbridge fire station was located at 16 Basil Street. Horses would remain in use in the London Fire Brigade until 1921, although motorised fire engines were being introduced into the service in increasing numbers. Seen here is the engine room with horse drawn engines and steamer pump ready for duty. Note the flue in the centre, to take the smoke away when the steamers boiler is first lit in the engine room

This evocative photograph captures the historic Knightsbridge fire station at 16 Basil Street, as it appeared in the early 1900s. Opened on 27 June 1907, this fire station was a vital part of the London Fire Brigade's network, serving the affluent Knightsbridge area. At the time, horses were still in use by the London Fire Brigade, although motorised fire engines were becoming increasingly common. In this image, we see the engine room of the station, filled with horse-drawn fire engines and a steamer pump, all ready for duty. The horses, powerful and muscular, are tethered to the vehicles, their heads resting wearily as they await their next call. The steam pump, with its large, domed boiler, dominates the room, its pipes and valves ready to be activated. A central flue can be seen in the photograph, designed to take the smoke away when the steamer's boiler is first lit in the engine room. The room itself is dimly lit, with large windows allowing in some natural light, and the brick walls and wooden beams adding to the rustic, industrial atmosphere.
