EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this evocative photograph of the interior of Knightsbridge Fire Station on Basil Street, London, as it looked in the early 1900s. Opened on 27 June 1907, this historic fire station was home to the horses and firemen of the London Fire Brigade until the service transitioned to motorised engines in 1921. In this image, we see the stables where the horses were kept, with their straw-filled stalls neatly arranged within or adjacent to the engine room. The horses played a crucial role in firefighting during this era, with coachmen designated as firemen responsible for driving the horse-drawn engines. The horses were an essential part of the firefighting team, and their stables were a vital component of the fire station infrastructure. The London Fire Brigade during this period, also known as the LCC Fire Brigade due to its governance by the London County Council, was undergoing significant changes as motorised engines began to replace horse-drawn vehicles. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the Edwardian era of firefighting, a time when horses and firemen worked together to protect the people and property of London.
