In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, London was undergoing rapid expansion, and the London Fire Brigade responded by not only building new fire stations but also taking over existing buildings and converting them to serve the growing community's fire safety needs. The Lee Green sub-station, which opened in 1895, is an excellent example of this adaptive reuse. Situated in a parade of shops and dwellings, the Edwardian building blends seamlessly into the terraced streetscape. The sub-station's distinctive red brick facade, adorned with the London Fire Brigade crest, stands out against the pastel-hued shops and dwellings that surround it.
