LCC-LFB Motorised Fire King fire engine

The Fire King was manufactured by Merryweather of Greenwich. The London Fire Brigade purchased the Fire King, one of the first going to Whitefriars fire station. Unfortunately the Fire Kings were slow (12 mph maximum) compared to horses, and cumbersome to steer. Stopping was also a problem as they weighed some 5.5 tons. They were not widely introduced

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph captures the London Fire Brigade's Motorised Fire King fire engine, one of the first acquired by the brigade from Merryweather of Greenwich. The Fire King, affectionately known as "The King," was a pioneering motorised fire appliance, but its introduction to the brigade was met with challenges. Weighing in at a hefty 5.5 tons, the Fire King was significantly heavier than the horses that had previously pulled fire engines. Its maximum speed of 12 mph was also a marked contrast to the agility of horse-drawn vehicles. The Fire King was equipped with powerful steam-powered pumps and ladders, making it a formidable tool for firefighting. However, its size and weight made it cumbersome to maneuver, particularly in the narrow streets and yards of Southwark and other densely populated areas of London. Stopping the Fire King was another problem, as its massive weight required a considerable distance to bring it to a halt. Despite these challenges, the London Fire Brigade persevered with the Motorised Fire King, recognizing its potential as a more efficient and effective means of transporting firefighting equipment to incidents. The crew, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, can be seen here preparing the appliance for action at Whitefriars fire station. The Fire King was an important step towards the eventual phasing out of horse-drawn fire engines and the widespread adoption of motorised fire appliances by the London Fire Brigade.
