LCC-LFB Notting Hill fire station, West London

Notting Hill fire station (A10) was built in 1868 by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), located at 83 Ladbroke Road. The year previous to this station opening (1867) escape ladders were put under the control of the MFB, taking over the role from the Royal Society for the Preservation of Life from Fire. Here the escape ladder can be seen by the Fire lantern, although the MFB now carried these ladders on horse drawn escape carts. The station closed in 1915 and was converted to a private residence

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the early 1900s, showcases Notting Hill fire station (A10) located at 83 Ladbroke Road in the heart of West London. Established in 1868 by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), this historic fire station is a testament to the evolution of firefighting services in London. The year prior to the station's opening, in 1867, the escape ladders were transferred from the Royal Society for the Preservation of Life from Fire to the MFB. In this image, an escape ladder can be seen leaning against the fire lantern, although the MFB had begun carrying these ladders on horse-drawn escape carts. The Edwardian-era fire station, with its red brick facade and ornate detailing, exudes an air of grandeur and importance. The firefighters of the MFB were dedicated to serving their community and protecting lives and property from the destructive power of fire. Notting Hill fire station closed its doors in 1915 and was later converted into a private residence. Today, this historic building stands as a reminder of the vital role the Metropolitan Fire Brigade played in the history of London and its commitment to fire safety and emergency services. This photograph, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a unique glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the rich history and tradition of the London Fire Brigade.
