EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Battersea Fire Station, located at the corner of Simpson Street and Battersea Road in London's SW8 area. Built by the Metropolitan Board of Works, the forerunner of the London County Council, in 1874, this fire station was one of three in the Battersea district at the turn of the 20th century. The Victorian-era building, with its distinctive red brick tower, exudes a sense of history and tradition. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), the precursor to the London Fire Brigade, operated from this station for over six decades before its closure in 1938. The fire station played a crucial role in protecting the community from fires and emergencies during a time when firefighting techniques and equipment were rapidly evolving. Today, this image serves as a reminder of the rich history of firefighting in London and the vital role that fire stations have played in shaping the city's urban landscape. The photograph, taken in the early 1900s, offers a unique glimpse into the past and the important work that was carried out by the brave men and women who served at Battersea Fire Station.
