LCC-MFB Cherry Garden river fire station, SE London

Built by the London County Council, Cherry Garden river fire station was located at Cherry Garden Street in Bermondsey. It was one of four Metropolitan Fire Brigade river stations and, from 1904, the London Fire Brigade. Fireboat Delta was stationed here, followed later by its replacement Gamma III. Although no land fire engines were stationed at Cherry Garden, as can be seen the station maintained a wheeled escape and a hose cart, together with two hook ladders. It remained open until 1948 when, after the fire service was denationalised, Londons river service came under review. Cherry Garden was deemed unnecessary and was closed

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Victorian Fire Station on the Thames: Cherry Garden River Fire Station, Bermondsey, SE London 2. Description: This evocative photograph captures the historic Cherry Garden River Fire Station, located at Cherry Garden Street in Bermondsey, South East London. Built by the London County Council (LCC) in the late 19th century, this fire station was one of four Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) river stations and, from 1904, became part of the London Fire Brigade (LFB). The station is seen here in its Victorian glory, with the fireboat Delta stationed at the riverside, ready to respond to emergencies on the Thames. Though no land fire engines were housed at Cherry Garden, the station was well-equipped with essentials for river rescues. The image reveals a wheeled escape, a hose cart, and two hook ladders. The station remained operational until 1948, when the London fire service underwent a significant review following denationalisation. Cherry Garden was deemed unnecessary and was subsequently closed. The red-brick, corner building with large windows exudes an air of grandeur and importance, reflecting the vital role the fire station played in protecting the local community and the bustling Thames traffic. The lush gardens surrounding the station add to the serene and picturesque scene, making it a unique and charming addition to the Bermondsey waterfront. This photograph, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into London's rich firefighting history and the importance of the river stations in safeguarding the city's waterways.
