In this evocative photograph from the London Fire Brigade's archives, we see a typical scene in any Metropolitan Fire Brigade fire station appliance room during the Victorian or Edwardian era. The room is filled with essential firefighting equipment, including an escape cart and a steamer, both standing at the ready for immediate use. The escape cart, a vital piece of equipment for rescuing firefighters in danger, is shown with its quick-release and connection harnesses, which were fitted to the teams of horses that were kept at the station.
