EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the appliance room of the former Kensington Fire Station, located in King Street, W8, London. The station, which was built in 1871, was a vital part of the London Fire Brigade's network for over three decades. In the early 1900s, as firefighting techniques and technology evolved, the old Kensington station began to show its age. In this image, taken in the latter days of the station's life, we see a line-up of horse-drawn fire engines and carts, each with its unique equipment and tools. The firemen, dressed in their heavy uniforms and helmets, are preparing for their next call. The station's interior is filled with a sense of history and tradition, with wooden beams, brick walls, and large windows that let in natural light. The appliance room is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the firefighters who served at Kensington Fire Station. The sliding pole, which was introduced in 1904 to help firefighters reach the upper floors more quickly, is not yet visible in this photograph. Tragically, the station was eventually closed in 1905 when a new Kensington Fire Station was opened. The old station was subsequently demolished, leaving behind only memories and this valuable photographic record of a bygone era in the history of the London Fire Brigade.
