EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic LCC-MFB Peckham Fire Station located in Peckham Road, Camberwell, London. Built by the Metropolitan Board of Works (MBW), the forerunner of the London County Council, in 1867, this fire station was the first of three stations to be erected on this site. The MBW aimed to improve the firefighting capabilities of London, and this station's construction marked a significant step towards achieving that goal. The Victorian-era fire station, with its red brick facade and ornate details, stands proudly opposite Southampton Way in SE5. The forecourt, adorned with horse-drawn fire engines, is a testament to the era's firefighting methods. The station's grandeur reflects the importance of firefighting services during this period. The Peckham Fire Station served the community for over six decades before closing its doors in 1925. It was eventually demolished to make way for the second station, which stood there until 1991. This photograph offers a glimpse into London's rich firefighting history and the evolution of fire stations in the city. The London Fire Brigade's (LFB) Peckham Fire Station, as depicted in this image, is a valuable reminder of the dedication and commitment of the firefighting services to protect the people of London. The station's architectural beauty and historical significance make it an essential addition to any collection focusing on London's history, firefighting, or Victorian-era buildings.
