EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the historic LCC-MFB Wandsworth fire station, located at 45 West Hill in South West London, in its Edwardian glory. Built by the London County Council in 1906, the red-brick station was a vital part of the community's emergency response system. However, during World War II, tragedy struck when the station suffered a direct hit, resulting in the tragic loss of six on-duty firemen. The community was left in shock, and the fire station became a poignant symbol of the sacrifices made during the war. Despite the devastating loss, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) rebuilt the station, ensuring that the vital emergency services continued to serve the people of Wandsworth. The station remained operational until 1958, when it was demolished to make way for a new fire station on the same site. This photograph, taken in the early 20th century, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the grandeur of the LCC-MFB fire station in its prime. The large, corner building with its distinctive chimney and ornate detailing stands proudly against the backdrop of West Hill, a testament to the bravery and dedication of the firemen who served there. The image is a poignant reminder of the history and heritage of the London Fire Brigade and the vital role that fire stations play in our communities."
