EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic West Norwood fire station in London, SE27, which opened in 1881 and was built by the Metropolitan Board of Works, the forerunner of the London County Council. Located in Norwood High Street, near Knights Hill, the station was one of the peripheral fire stations of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), serving the areas bordering Penge and Croydon. The Edwardian-era building, with its distinctive red brick façade and tall chimney, operated until 1916 when it was replaced by a new fire station in Norwood Road. Today, the former West Norwood fire station stands as a testament to the rich history of London's firefighting heritage. The building, now over a century old, continues to serve the community as a cultural venue, housing a community theatre company. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the architectural beauty and historical significance of London's firefighting stations during the early 1900s.
