EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the 1930s, London Fire Brigade Chief Officer Major Cyril Morris CBE.MC.KPM is seen at the scene of the devastating Crystal Palace fire, in the company of His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent. The fire, which broke out on the night of November 30, 1936, destroyed a large portion of the famous Crystal Palace in Sydenham, South London. Major Morris, who retired from the London Fire Brigade in 1938, is shown here in his full firefighting regalia, complete with helmet and breathing apparatus, as he discusses the situation with the Duke of Kent. The Duke, who was the Honorary Colonel of the London Fire Brigade, had come to offer his support and show solidarity with the brave firemen and women who were working tirelessly to bring the blaze under control. The fire, which was one of the largest in London's history, raged for over 12 hours, and destroyed many of the historic buildings and exhibits within the Crystal Palace complex. Despite the challenging conditions, the London Fire Brigade, under the leadership of Major Morris, was able to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the immediate area, and no lives were lost. This photograph, taken during the dark hours of the night, captures the determination and resilience of the London Fire Brigade as they worked to contain the blaze, with the Duke of Kent looking on in admiration and support. It is a powerful reminder of the vital role that firefighters play in protecting their communities, and the importance of unity and cooperation in times of crisis.
