LFB firefighters and winter snows, WW2

The early winters of WW2 were snowy with numerous falls of 1-2 feet and occasional falls (such as 1940-41) in which snow depths of up to 16 feet (drifts) were recorded. The South was quite badly affected, although more particularly the South-West and Wales. 1939-40 saw the supposed blizzard of the decade in Scotland and England when in late January snow fell widely. The wartime firemen were kept busy keeping their station yards free of snow

EDITORS COMMENTS
"Amidst the harsh winter of the early 1940s during World War II, London Fire Brigade firefighters braved the snowy conditions to keep their stations and yards operational. The winters of this era were particularly severe, with frequent falls of 1-2 feet and occasional deeper drifts of up to 16 feet. The South of England, specifically the South-West and Wales, were hit the hardest. The winter of 1939-40 brought the supposed blizzard of the decade, with snowfall widespread in Scotland and England in late January. In this evocative photograph from the London Fire Brigade's archives, firefighters are seen clearing snow from their station yard, ensuring they could continue their vital work protecting the city during these challenging times. The image captures the determination and resilience of these wartime heroes, who faced not only the fires they were trained for but also the unforgiving winter weather. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the London Fire Brigade during the 1940s, a time when keeping the city safe meant battling not just the flames but also the snowdrifts."
