EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Kensington fire station, built in 1872, located on the corner of King Street and Ball Street in London's affluent W8 postcode area. The Victorian-era building, operated by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), replaced a temporary station in Lower Phillimore Mews, Hornton Street. The red brick station facade, adorned with ornate detailing and the distinctive London Fire Brigade crest, exudes a sense of tradition and service. Firefighting appliances, including a ladder and wheeled equipment, are visible in the foreground, ready for action. The Edwardian era, marked by the turn of the 20th century, brought advancements in firefighting technology and infrastructure. Despite this, the Kensington fire station, with its Victorian charm, continued to serve the community until the opening of the present station in Old Court Place in 1904. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of firefighting in London, showcasing the dedication and commitment of the MFB to protect the city's residents and property. The image also highlights the architectural beauty of the fire station, which stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and design of the Victorian era.
