EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Shooters Hill fire station, located at Old Police Station on Well Hall Road in London, in the early 1900s. The station, which opened in 1879 as a part of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), was originally a converted police station. The building's Edwardian architecture is on full display, with its red brick facade, ornate detailing, and tall, arched windows. At the time of this image, Shooters Hill fire station was one of the boundary stations of the London County Council (LCC) Fire Brigade, with its station grounds bordering the Kent Fire Brigade area. The station's significance is further highlighted by its status as a boundary station, marking the divide between different fire brigades in the rapidly expanding city. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade, which had been established in 1865, was later absorbed into the London County Council Fire Brigade in 1889. The LCC continued to operate the fire station until 1912, when a new Shooters Hill fire station was built by the LCC nearby. This photograph, taken around 1905, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the dedication and hard work of the firefighters who served at this important station during the Edwardian era.
