EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph from the London Fire Brigade's archives, dating back to July 1947, a young boy is seen being freed from the confines of a coal scuttle at the Brigade's Headquarters. The situation was not as dire as it may seem, however, as the boy had earlier found himself trapped inside a milk churn that had been delivered to the fire station in a milk float. The milkman, making his usual rounds, had brought the churn to the station for the firemen to refill their water supply. Unbeknownst to him, the curious boy had climbed inside the churn for a playful adventure, only to find himself trapped when the lid was accidentally closed and secured. Realizing the boy was inside, the firemen sprang into action, carefully extracting him from the metal container with the help of their colleagues. The boy, no doubt feeling a mix of embarrassment and relief, was freed to the cheers and laughter of the firemen. The incident, though an embarrassing one for the young boy, was a testament to the quick thinking and teamwork of the London Fire Brigade. The photograph captures a moment of camaraderie and lightheartedness amidst the serious business of firefighting in the 1940s. This image, from the extensive collection of the London Fire Brigade at Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the human side of the fire service and the everyday situations that firefighters encountered during this era.
