EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a newly born Bottlenose Dolphin calf, weighing approximately 16 kg and measuring 120 cm in length, eagerly nurses from its mother, Blue, in the tranquil waters of Oltremare Lagoon in Riccione, Italy. The pregnancy lasted 54 weeks, and the male calf was born on July 2nd, 2010, at 8:02 am. Within just 2 and a half hours after birth, the calf began to take milk, feeding at an average of two to three times per hour. Blue, a 14-year-old female, was born in Delphinarium Rimini, Italy, in 1996. Her mate, Micha, a 25-year-old male, hails from Cuba and has been in Italy since 1989. The bond between mother and calf is strong, as they engage in a vital and nurturing moment, with the mother providing essential nutrients to help her offspring grow and thrive. Bottlenose Dolphins, scientifically known as Tursiops truncatus, are a widely distributed and social species of marine mammals found worldwide in shallow seas and estuaries. They are known for their distinctive rounded foreheads and long, curved beaks.
