EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful Chromolithograph Devotional Card dates back to 1912 and depicts the venerated Italian saint, Saint Gerard Majella. Born in Muro Lucano, Basilicata, Italy, in 1726, Gerard joined the Congregation of the Redeemer, also known as the Redemptorists, at the age of 19. He is renowned for his deep spirituality, angelic purity, and extraordinary gifts of faith and healing. The image captures Saint Gerard in prayer, his eyes closed in devotion as he gazes upon the Host held by an angel. The saint's hands are folded in supplication, and a halo surrounds his head, symbolizing his sainthood. In the background, an altar and a skull serve as reminders of the transient nature of earthly life and the importance of spiritual preparation for the afterlife. This card was a cherished keepsake for a young communicant on the occasion of their first Holy Communion, held on March 11, 1912. The card's intricate details and vibrant colors were achieved through the Chromolithograph process, a popular method for producing high-quality, detailed prints during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The card's reverse bears the signature of Monseigneur Scalbert, a Catholic prelate, adding to its historical significance. The image of Saint Gerard Majella continues to inspire and uplift, reminding us of the importance of faith, prayer, and the pursuit of spiritual growth.
