EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determined gaze of Commander C.R. Samson, a British naval aviation pioneer, as he sits proudly next to his wife, Mrs. Honor Samson, in 1917. Born on 8 July 1883, Samson was one of the first four officers selected for pilot training by the Royal Navy and became the first person to fly an aircraft from a moving ship. His groundbreaking achievements extended beyond naval aviation, as he also commanded the first British armored vehicles used in combat. As the First World War raged on, Samson transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force in 1918 and held several commanding roles in the post-war period and throughout the 1920s. His wife, formerly Miss Honor Storey, worked as a nurse for the Red Cross during the war, adding another layer of resilience and dedication to their story. The image showcases the couple in their formal attire, with Samson wearing his uniform adorned with his impressive list of decorations, including the CMG, DSO & Bar, and AFC. The photograph is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their respective roles during a time of great upheaval and innovation. This historical portrait, taken in 1917, offers a glimpse into the lives of two remarkable individuals who played significant roles in the annals of British military history. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage, determination, and sacrifice displayed by those who served during the First World War.
