EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment the legendary England polo team, victorious winners of the International Polo Cup (Westchester Cup) in 1914, arrived in the United States. The team, composed of five esteemed players, includes Vivian Noverre Lockett, Major Frederick W. Barrett, Colonel Henry Archdale Tomkinson, John Arthur Edward Traill, and the renowned Captain Leslie St. Clair Cheape. Captain Leslie St. Clair Cheape, a British soldier and polo player, is depicted in the foreground with a confident and determined expression. Known as England's greatest polo player, Cheape played for the national team in the Westchester Cup three times, in 1911, 1913, and 1914. His exceptional skills and leadership on the field contributed significantly to the team's success. Tragically, Cheape's life was cut short when he was killed on 23 April 1916 while commanding a squadron of the Worcestershire Yeomanry on the Western Front during World War I. The other team members, Major Barrett, Colonel Tomkinson, Vivian Noverre Lockett, and John Traill, also served their country during the war. This historic photograph not only encapsulates the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie but also serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these exceptional athletes during a time of global conflict.
