German Ambassador Prince Lichnowsky leaves London

Following Britains declaration of war on Germany, the German Ambassador to London, Karl Max, Prince Lichnowsky leaves the Embassy. He is glimpsed here in the back of the car, with Princess Lichnowsky with her pet dog about to join him. Despite the state of war, a special train was provided for them and a guard of honour mounted in Harwich. During the July Crisis Lichnowsky had objected to the German governments apparent efforts to provoke war, and sought to encourage a diplomatic solution to the crisis. In 1916 he published a pamphlet accusing his superiors of failing to support his efforts to avert war. Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, German Ambassador Prince Karl Max von Lichnowsky bids farewell to London as the shadows of war loom on the horizon. The image captures a moment of departure from the Embassy, with the ambassador and his wife, Princess Lichnowsky, seated in the back of a car. Their pet dachshund joins them, adding a sense of normalcy to the extraordinary scene. The year is 1914, and the world is on the brink of the First World War. Britain has declared war on Germany, and the Lichnowskys are leaving London under the protection of a special train and a guard of honor at Harwich. Prince Lichnowsky had been a vocal opponent of the German government's actions leading up to the crisis, advocating for diplomatic solutions to prevent war. During the July Crisis, Lichnowsky had raised concerns about Germany's provocative actions and sought to maintain peace. However, his efforts were not supported by his superiors. In 1916, he published a pamphlet, "My Mission in London," accusing the German government of failing to support his diplomatic efforts and ultimately contributing to the outbreak of war. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict and the complexities of diplomacy during a time of great upheaval. The Lichnowskys' departure from London marks the end of an era and the beginning of a long and devastating war that would change the course of history.
