Construction of an EWS dam, Abbey Street, Bermondsey
Emergency water supplies (EWS) were critical to provide the much needed water to fire crews fighting the fires caused by wartime bombing and, in particular, incendiary attacks. Some were purpose built, like the one shown here, others were created out of the basements of bombed buildings. Water mains could not always be relied on as enemy action could damage or destroy these and, if river supplies were not readily available, emergency water supplies from these dams were, in many cases, the only alternative

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the construction of an Emergency Water Supplies (EWS) dam in Abbey Street, Bermondsey, during the 1940s. The Second World War brought unprecedented challenges to London Fire Brigade (LFB) firefighters, as they battled fires ignited by wartime bombing and, in particular, incendiary attacks. Traditional water mains were not always a reliable source, as enemy action could damage or destroy these essential infrastructure. In such situations, emergency water supplies from dams like the one shown here became crucial. The LFB, in collaboration with other emergency services, built and maintained these dams to ensure a steady supply of water for firefighting efforts. This dam on Abbey Street was one of many such structures constructed in London during the war. The image shows a guard standing watch over the dam's construction, ensuring the safety and security of the ongoing project. The fire brigade service members worked tirelessly to build these dams, often under difficult conditions, to provide much-needed water to their fellow firefighters. The 1940s were a critical period for London Fire Brigade, as they faced the dual challenges of putting out fires caused by bombing and ensuring a constant water supply for their firefighting efforts. The EWS dams played a vital role in this endeavor, providing emergency water when traditional sources were unavailable. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the resilience and determination of the London Fire Brigade during the Second World War.
