LCC-LFB Herne Hill fire station, Brockwell Park SE27

Built by the London County Council, Herne Hill fire station was located at Milkwood Road, Herne Hill. The widespread adoption of motorised fire engines by the LFB led to a reduction in the number of fire stations required. A report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of 15, and this station was one of them. However the building still stands and remains a fine example of the LCCs building programme

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures LCC-LFB Herne Hill Fire Station, situated at Milkwood Road in Herne Hill, London, around 1910. The Edwardian building, a fine example of the London County Council's (LCC) architectural programme, once played a vital role in the community's fire safety services. Built by the LCC, Herne Hill fire station was one of many established to provide quick response to fires in the rapidly expanding city. However, with the widespread adoption of motorised fire engines by the London Fire Brigade (LFB), the number of stations required was significantly reduced. A report produced in 1920 recommended the closure of 15 stations, and unfortunately, Herne Hill was among those earmarked for decommission. Despite its closure, the historic Herne Hill fire station continues to stand proudly in Brockwell Park, SE27. Its red brick facade, adorned with intricate details, is a testament to the LCC's commitment to creating functional yet aesthetically pleasing structures. Today, it serves as a reminder of the rich history of London's fire services and the evolution of emergency response systems. The photograph, taken in the early 20th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the fire station's horses and firemen, ready to answer the call to duty. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the dedication and bravery of the firefighters who once worked at Herne Hill station.
