EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the determination and passion of Sarah Ellen (Nell) Kenney (1876-1953), an inspiring figure in the British suffragette movement. Born in Lees, Lancashire, Nell and her sisters Annie, Jessie, Caroline, and Jane, all worked in cotton mills from a young age. However, Nell's spirit for change led her to become a member of the Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U) and a local organiser in the West Midlands. At a suffragette rally, Nell met Frank Randall Clarke, a fellow activist, and they married in 1908-9. Following their union, the couple emigrated to Canada, continuing their fight for women's rights and suffrage in a new land. Nell's story is a testament to the courage and resilience of the suffragettes, who dedicated their lives to securing the right to vote for women. This photograph, taken circa 1906, captures the essence of Nell's unwavering commitment to the cause, as she stood strong in her beliefs and fought for a better future for women everywhere.
