This evocative photograph captures the facade of Hammersmith Rowton House, one of six large, purpose-built low-cost hostels erected around London in 1899. The Rowton Houses were designed to provide temporary accommodation for working men and their families, offering a respite from the harsh realities of urban poverty and overcrowded living conditions. The scene before us shows the imposing red-brick building on Hammersmith Road, with its grand entrance and ornate stonework. Despite its impressive appearance, the Rowton House was far from a luxurious residence. Inside, rows of small, bare rooms housed multiple families, each paying a weekly rent that ensured affordability but offered few comforts.
