EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the facade of Hammersmith Rowton House, one of six large, purpose-built low-cost hostels erected around London in 1899. The Rowton Houses were designed to provide temporary accommodation for working men and their families, offering a respite from the harsh realities of urban poverty and overcrowded living conditions. The scene before us shows the imposing red-brick building on Hammersmith Road, with its grand entrance and ornate stonework. Despite its impressive appearance, the Rowton House was far from a luxurious residence. Inside, rows of small, bare rooms housed multiple families, each paying a weekly rent that ensured affordability but offered few comforts. Children play in the courtyard, their laughter mingling with the sounds of clanging pots and pans from the communal kitchen. The bustling activity outside contrasts sharply with the somber, muted tones of the photograph, hinting at the complex social conditions that defined the lives of the men, women, and children who called these hostels home. The Rowton Houses were a testament to the social reform efforts of their time, aiming to address the pressing issue of homelessness and provide a modicum of stability for the working class. Though these institutions have since been replaced by more modern housing solutions, they remain an important chapter in London's history, offering a glimpse into the lives of the city's working men and their families during the late 19th century.
