EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the corner view of the historic Galatea pub in Peckham, London, during the 1930s. The Galatea, located at SE15 3SQ, was a beloved local establishment with a rich history that dates back to at least 1934, as evidenced by the trading record depicted on the reverse side of the print. The pub, which was once a popular gathering place for the community, is seen here in its prime, with its distinctive signage and brick facade. The 1930s were a significant time in the history of the Galatea, as it continued to serve the residents of Peckham during a period of great social and economic change. Despite the challenges of the era, the pub remained a staple of the community, providing a welcoming space for friends and neighbors to gather and connect. Unfortunately, the Galatea's story did not have a happy ending. By July 2018, the pub had closed and been demolished, leaving behind only memories and this precious photograph. The reverse side of the print reveals that the Galatea met its fate in 1939, a tragic end to a beloved institution. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Galatea was a vibrant and integral part of Peckham's social fabric. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the history of our local communities and the cherished places that define them.
